The experimental art-rock group of Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo, and David Kendrick has been steadily mastering the art of the cover. They’ve released full-length tribute albums to Nina Simone (2013’s Nina) and to Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks soundtrack (2016’s Plays the Music of Twin Peaks), and since 2020, they’ve put their haunted spin on a wide-ranging selection of songs via their Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu subscription service. On Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1, the band compiles 12 of those covers, sharing their alternately dreamy and doomed takes on songs from Roy Orbison, GloRilla, and Throbbing Gristle; scuzzing up The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” with harsh noise; and injecting Robyn’s euphoric “Dancing on My Own” with a much-needed dose of mortal terror.
