Selects: Call Super

Selects: Call Super

In the last few years, JR Seaton’s work as Call Super has increasingly been marked by surprises. While the UK-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ has by no means abandoned the club beats and textures that defined their earlier dance-floor tracks, their 2023 LP Eulo Cramps owes as much to the traditions of musique concrète, electro-acoustic composition, free jazz, and folk as it does house or techno. Seaton’s picks for this edition of Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best DJs and producers share their favorite tracks of the moment—illustrate that expanding curiosity. To wit, Seaton describes their playlist to Apple Music by first asking a question: “What’s ringing in the forest?” they say. “Aqua-sculptures, wrinkly bark, lost kites to branches, suspended droplets, logging machines and light beams, dappled leaf. Regrowth. This canopy sheltering me and you like a second sheltering sky. Here are songs that have held me and encouraged me to feel better most days. There is a warmth in these expressions. I hope you find some inspiration too in this little forest.” With songs from artists as far-ranging as Yoko Ono, Lester Bowie, The Microphones, The Marshall Tucker Band, Natanael Cano, and The Modern Lovers, it's quite a place to get lost in.
