Following the release of their glammy 2020 concept-album curveball Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones, The Neighbourhood announced a hiatus that ended up lasting the better part of five years. But they’ve reemerged on (((((ultraSOUND))))) rested and refreshed, with a dam-bursting barrage of 15 songs that reaffirms their commitment to pulsating alt-pop earworms—like “Lovebomb” and “Planet”—that thread yearning R&B melodies with vibey indie textures. But you could also hear (((((ultraSOUND))))) as The Neighbourhood’s unofficial after-party for Oasis’ summer 2025 reunion tour, with the opening “Hula Girl” and “OMG” shuffling in with a distinctly Manchester swagger while “Rabbit” and “Daisy Chain” are the sort of starry-eyed ballads that turn Wembley Stadium into a sea of illuminated cigarette lighters. And that psychedelic sensibility can also lead The Neighbourhood into uncharted territory, like the intense acidic rocker “Lil Ol Me,” whose fiery, fuzzed-out finale suggests this band isn’t entirely concerned with chasing those billions of “Sweater Weather” streams.
