Canadian songwriter Jade LeMac’s rise was swift, thanks in large part to the success of her breakthrough single “Constellations.” That song served as the title track to her 2023 debut, which introduced a blend of sharp, incisive songwriting with epic instrumentals built for adoring crowds packed into clubs, theaters, and, one day, arenas. On It’s Always at Night, a tidy six-track EP, she furthers her songwriting development and explores love in all its manifestations. “Running Home” is an electro-fused pop banger that builds and builds before reaching a cathartic chorus that’s accented by statements of devotion and cinematic string swells. On “Sleeping with the Lights On,” LeMac opts for balladry, showcasing her impressive vocal range across a landscape of acoustic guitar chords and pedal steel. She admits to, as the title suggests, sleeping with the lights on, but her clever lyricism reveals an ulterior motive: “I’m scared of the silence, I’m scared of dreams where I’m not yours, darling.”
