Free Roy, Free Fletch

Don Trip opens Free Roy, Free Fletch with “Puzzle Pieces,” a not-even-three-minute song with no hook that finds Trip spitting about his invincibility and his new child with equal ferocity. It sets the tone for these seven urgent tracks rooted in the horns and drums of the Memphis sound. “No Such Thing” is introspective, a piano laying a landscape for Trip to rap about using money as an escape from mental anguish. Album closer “9:41Am” finds him nostalgic, pledging his allegiance to rap.
