Pinnock was steeped in classical music in his childhood, learning to play the piano and joining a local choir before moving on to a range of other instruments. He toured as a harpsichordist before founding The English Concert in 1972, performing baroque pieces on period instruments and in turn becoming one of the most accomplished English conductors of the 20th century.
