Threshold Essentials

Threshold Essentials

Threshold is one of the earliest acts to have put an English stamp on American prog metal. The Surrey band began crossing power-metal crunch with the crystal-like vocals and melodies of English prog rock as early as its 1993 debut, Wounded Land, a concept album meditating upon global ecology. Searing instrumental passages are placed in service of elegant songwriting, while atmosphere proves just as vital as complexity. With guitarist and composer Karl Groom further honing this approach over a succession of lineups, Threshold hit its creative and commercial stride after hooking up with Nuclear Blast Records in 2006. On albums like 2014’s For the Journey and 2017’s Legends of the Shires, the group infuses its stellar songcraft with electronic textures that subtly blur the lines between heroic fantasy and dystopian sci-fi.
