The Stranglers: Next Steps

The Stranglers created a particularly riffy and venomous form of garage rock, perfect for punk-era London. Although they successfully matured into other areas, from synth-pop to outright balladry, their classic sound, heard in songs such as “Five Minutes,” is heavy on the organ—thanks to keyboardist Dave Greenfield's sparkling runs—and even heavier on the fuzz bass.
