Tenebrae Essentials

Tenebrae Essentials

Founded in 2001 by the former King’s Singer Nigel Short, the London-based choral ensemble Tenebrae have grown their reputation for brilliance in almost every corner of the choral repertoire, ancient to modern. Among their Renaissance offerings are pristine performances of Victoria’s Requiem Mass and Tenebrae Responsories, and a full-blooded Allegri Miserere. Equally fervent is the Brahms motet “Wo ist ein so herrlich Volk”, while—moving to the 20th century—Howells’ hypnotic anthem Like as the Hart possesses an English reserve that enticingly hints at its underlying passion. In the realm of contemporary music, Tenebrae have also been true champions, bringing the work of Joby Talbot, Owain Park, Alexander L’Estrange, Paweł Łukaszewski, and others to wide public attention.
