Editors’ Notes You might think that virtuosic jazz-fusion bass solos had no place in electronic music, but then, you wouldn't be Tom Jenkinson. Better known as Squarepusher, he spent the '90s dreaming up mind-bending mutations of drum 'n' bass—or drill 'n' bass, as his hyper-speed breakbeats were often dubbed—for labels like Warp and Rephlex. Over more than a dozen albums, he's explored noise blasts, dizzyingly complex programming, overdriven funk-rock (as Shobaleader One, a virtual combo), and an entire album of solo electric bass. He even recorded with Z-Machines, an ensemble of programmable robots.
