Selects: Isolée

Twenty-five years ago, Frankfurt producer/DJ Isolée (aka Rajko Müller) broke out with what was arguably the first hit of the microhouse genre, “Beau Mot Plage,” a track that recast house music in miniature, distilling it down to its essentials without losing any of its trademark emotional heft or swinging groove. It was as inviting a listen on headphones as on a dance floor—or, as detractors might note, in a chic hotel lounge, where the song and its limp soundalikes took on a life of their own in the years to follow. Isolée’s music never really belonged there. It was too restless, too textured, too inventively different. As such, one could read the title of Resort Island, Müller's first album in 12 years (following 2011’s Well Spent Youth), as a bit of a critique of that casual opulence. Its tracks might come on plush and easy, but they often give way to something icier—less controlled, but no less reclined. For his Selects—the playlist in which DJs and producers share the tracks they’ve been digging—Müller takes a similarly subdued approach, blending atmospheric techno and house with The Fall, The Byrds, Laurie Anderson, and other less expected inclusions. “This is a selection of my favorite songs of a more laidback style, in no special order,” he tells Apple Music. “It's a mixture of music of no specific genres. These tunes are inspiring and relaxing at the same time to me, especially because of their wide soundscape and for being emotionally captivating without getting very offensive.” Check out his Selects, and if you like something, add it to your library.
