No one has ever made flamenco quite like Rosalía Vila. On tracks like “Catalina,” from her 2017 debut, the Spanish singer shows herself a master of the genre's classic style, performing devastating vocal maneuvers over guitar that bolts forward and stops on a dime. Since then, however, she's charted a new direction, trading guitar for R&B synths. “MALAMENTE,” the first “chapter" of her 2018 follow-up, exemplifies this fusion: Its handclaps seem to reverberate across borders, invoking both the centuries-old rhythms of Cuba and Southern Spain and the hard, hip-hop beats of songs like Clipse's “Grindin'." She only goes further down the rabbithole on 2022's MOTOMAMI, fusing reggaetón with avant-garde minimalism and other experimental forms.
