In honor of Earth Day, actor Nathalie Kelley takes over our Mixtape for Mother Earth playlist. Below, she explains how she curated her selections.
The concept of “right relationship" with the Earth and all living beings is one that Indigenous people intimately understand. It means living in balance with the natural world, giving back more than what we take. Being Indigenous Quechua (Peruvian) on my mother’s side, I felt it was my duty to speak up on behalf of Indigenous wisdom which is being lost. Representing only 3% of the world’s population but protecting 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity—it is critical that we learn from their sophisticated understanding of how to come back into balance and harmony with the Earth. For Indigenous people, every day is Earth Day. Every day is a good day to thank the Earth for providing us with food, energy, shelter, clean water—life itself!
The music I have curated here is a mixture of Indigenous artists and those who have been inspired by Indigenous cultures and music. All songs serve to inspire a deeper connection to the Earth and all living beings. Indigenous people understand the power of music to heal, to bridge divides and unify—so that we can come together for the healing of this beautiful planet that we call home.
