Malavoi Essentials

An intoxicating cocktail that blends elements of old-fashioned Western dance compositions—the stately sway of a waltz, the nimble mincing of a mazurka—with Latin jazz, bossa, samba, and charanga, Malavoi's music is island-hopping swing from the Caribbean Sea. Founded in the '70s, the ensemble boasted a shifting lineup (including various horn and string players), though pianist Paulo Rosine provided both heart and virtuosic leadership through the decades. Still, the Martinican crew forged ahead after his death in 1993, ensuring Malavoi's raucous spirit and goosed-zouk vibe live on.
