Jesse Colin Young Essentials

Jesse Colin Young’s best-known work came when he was a member of The Youngbloods, whose idealistic 1969 take on “Get Together” became one of the most iconic recordings of the 1960s; he also wrote plenty of the band’s other singles, including the Celtic-sounding “Darkness, Darkness” and “Sugar Babe.” But both before and after he found generation-shaping success in that ensemble, Young recorded plenty of work as a soloist, mostly in a folk and folk-rock vein (Jesse Colin Young was a stage name meant to recall famous outlaws). Song for Juli, released in 1973, was his most successful album, and spanned both his folksier work (as on the primarily instrumental title track), funkier tracks like “Ridgetop,” and traditional-sounding country songs like “Miss Hesitation.” Much of his work through the ’70s and ’80s, like “Songbird” and “Light Shine,” retained a sunny Southern California lilt, reflecting the native New Yorker’s move west. Eventually he would move even further west to Hawaii, as reflected by the island sound and theme of “Living in Paradise.”
