The Independent era also produced classic releases from the top producers: J-Dilla, Madlib, DJ Muggs, Nujabes, El-P, and DJ Shadow. This era also saw a resurgence in DJ focused albums and a return to Funk/Soul breaks in music production. Meanwhile, MF DOOM completely dominated the first half of the decade through his prolific catalogue, he is widely considered to be in the top league of lyricists. Later half of the decade saw the rise of Detroit and Chicago MC’s proving themselves to be just as raw as the other major city’s elite MC’s. This era was on the verge of being the third Golden Age of Hip Hop.
