Hip Hop History vol. 2: New School 1983-1985

The New School era of Hip Hop birthed the DefJam label which helped introduce the new music style to the world. Hip hop was growing exponentially sonically and was on the verge of completely changing. Run DMC paved the way for commercial Hip Hop in not only music but clothing style as well which made it more accessible for mainstream America. Despite major changes to the landscape of Hip Hop, the New School era was a transitional time in between which Hip Hop evolved in complexity production-wise and lyrically. In these years the old school groups started to fade away in popularity such as Afrika Bambaataa, Furious 5, and the Cold Crush. The end of the era also marked the birth of an important piece in the transition to the first Golden Age was the Juice Crew. The production and MC team was flawless and would be imitated for years to come. During this time Hip Hop spread world wide through music but also through film, the following helped spread the culture: STYLE WARS (1983) WILD STYLE (1983) BEAT STREET (1984) BREAKIN’ (1984) BREAKIN’ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO (1984)
