Floating Points Essentials

Whether writing club tracks or ensemble pieces, Floating Points—the UK's Samuel Shepherd—never forgets that electronic music is first and foremost about pleasure. His early work revels in the groove: “Vacuum Boogie” and “Truly,” from 2009, are slow, slinky house anthems that radiate rich colors and sensuous funk, while “Arp3” and “Sais” fix upon supple, spongy UK garage rhythms. But the full extent of his vision is best heard on releases like 2015's Elaenia, a soul-jazz opus bursting with post-rock drums and guitars (“Peroration Six”) and meditative Rhodes riffing (“Elaenia”).
