Devonté Hynes Essentials

Devonté Hynes is best known for the adventurous R&B and pop he has released as Blood Orange, as well as for his production and co-writing for major artists like Solange, Mariah Carey, and Kylie Minogue. However, the Houston-born, London-raised musician has maintained an interest in participating in music outside the pop realm throughout his career, whether in avant-garde experiments with his band Test Icicles or performances of works by Philip Glass, Moondog, and Julian Eastman. By the turn of the 2020s, he had also established himself in earnest as a soundtrack composer. One of Hynes’ first breakthroughs came with his score for the 2013 film Palo Alto, which channeled ambient and electronic music influences. He gradually took on more projects in this vein, providing prismatic, electroacoustic orchestrations for the acclaimed 2019 film Queen & Slim and spare, jazz-inflected cues for the 2021 Netflix vehicle Passing.
