At Home With Buju Banton: The Playlist

“One moves from the heart,” Buju Banton tells Apple Music about his optimistic track “Unity,” one of the two tracks off his album Upside Down 2020 that he included on this exclusive Apple Music playlist he curated himself. “One functions from a place of empathy and love despite what the enemy is doing to you, because man can only do what you let them do unto you. If you forgive them, they have done nothing to you.” This reggae-heavy set by the Jamaican recording artist also includes fellow legends of the genre such as Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, and Junior Byles. He did, however, make an exception by adding in soul and R&B legend Gladys Knight, an artist he deeply admires. “‘I see the sun, yes, and I hear the rolling thunder’—those words sung by sister Gladys touch you and cause you to reflect on a deeper essence,” he says about Knight’s 1968 classic with the Pips “How Great Thou Art,” included here. “It’s one of the most beautiful songs you could listen to on a big, beautiful Sunday morning.”
