About Alton Ellis

The Jamaican singer and songwriter Alton Ellis was one of the first artists to transform American R&B songs into a specifically Jamaican context, first as half of the duo Alton and Eddie in the 1950s, then as a successful solo performer. In the 1960s he had hits on both Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label and Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle imprint, while the ‘70s saw his music taking a rootsier though no less commercial direction, with such successes as “Deliver Us” and “Back to Africa.” Though somewhat diminished, his career continued well into the early 1990s.
