Bob Dylan: Next Steps

Bob Dylan: Next Steps

To understand what a Dylan deep cut sounds like, look no further than “The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar.” Is it a raucous, soulful slab ripped from his Highway 61 electric period? Nope. It's a little-known b-side from 1981, off the not-exactly-well-received gospel record Shot of Love—but it still packs the swagger and scorn of a Blonde on Blonde-era masterpiece. “Brownsville Girl” finds one of America's greatest lyricists hooking up with one of America's greatest playwrights, Sam Shepard, for a gently swaying, 11-minute-long epic story that's as heartfelt and evocative is as it funny and playful. And while “Chimes of Freedom” may not have had a prominent place in Dylan's catalog, it became a greatest hit for The Byrds.
