HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Billie Eilish’s adventurous third album, rightfully takes center stage at its namesake world tour, which kicked off in Quebec City on September 29, 2024, and wraps in Dublin the following July. But the alt-pop innovator makes room for songs from each of her eras, including cuts off of her blockbuster debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, her second full-length Happier Than Ever, and even her lesser-known EPs dont smile at me and Guitar Songs. The kickoff show, a celebration of Eilish’s impressive vocal range and casual sense of humor, often felt laidback and intimate, as if she’d invited 18,000 of her closest friends into her parents’ basement. (She wore a jersey; she complained of a wedgie; she wrestled with her hair ties.) But it was also peppered with little moments that served as reminders of the unstoppable cultural force she has become. In addition to rallying an arena of young, mostly female fans to scream along to her queer anthem “LUNCH,” she performed her 2023 hit “What Was I Made For?” (an Oscar-winning track from 2023’s biggest film, Barbie), as well as her internet-breaking remix to Charli xcx’s “Guess,” which arrived at the tail end of BRAT summer and vowed to keep the party going.
