Legend has it that ska began when radio signals from New Orleans came into Jamaica, but reception was so poor that local musicians learned to play on the offbeat. In any case, ska developed into a distinctive, danceable mix of calypso, Jamaican mento and R&B, ultimately evolving into reggae. In the U.S. it was adopted by hit bands like No Doubt and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
