2020-07 Part 4

Black Fur opener put out by Numero Group—one of my favorite Soul reissue labels in Chicago. Forgot this 2005 Jay Z song. Love the ‘Morning Sunrise’ sample. The Lou Turner Austin-to-Nashville folk album is one of my favorites this year. Amazed that the Teyana song has Missy, Timbaland, Future and 90s Blaque ‘808’ song sampled. Love her whole new album. Lucinda jam reminds me of lazy Austin summer days; she sings the line “tangerines and persimmons” real pretty like no one else could. Twin Peaks is from Chicago and they have a great catalog that I’ve been slowly wading through. Haven’t listened to J Period production in years but I remember him having a really good remix of a Nas song with Jay Electronica . The Courtney’s have such great hazy summer rock records front to back. They are from Canada but I’m pretty sure they belong in New Zealand. Hot Water Music record still holds up; nice to discover it has been remastered and sounds great. A Night of Love is one of those weird obscure 70s folk records I tend to swoon over. Recorded in rural Mississippi with local farmhands. Jungle Ungle Um Bai and Button Up Your Overcoat help to scratch the novelty song itch. New Beths album is good like the last one. I like them. Miriam Makeba is 70s South African jam that was sampled by Devin the Dude for ‘Doobie Ashtray’ (also a great jam). Heard Maimouna Youssef song on the radio, heartbreaking that it was written in 2017 and not much has changed at all.
