Waa Wei’s Have a Nice Day: Do Not Disturb

We’ve all dealt with the pandemic in our own ways. For Waa Wei, she didn’t mind the lockdowns too much. “I’ve always been a homebody,” she tells Apple Music. “Even before the pandemic, I’d write songs at home… If I’m doing something else, my mind is taking things in and imagining, or reading creative things to accumulate inspiration.” Even the less inspired among us need the right music for staying in. To celebrate the release of her seventh album, Have a Nice Day, Wei shares her breezy playlist of indie-pop and bedroom electro to relax and enjoy the pleasures of home. The playlist begins with singer-songwriters such as indie-folk artist Faye Webster, R&B singer Daniela Andrade and Latin pop artist maye. But Wei singles out a favourite—Honeywhip’s “Feels Good to Laugh.” “That song sounds just really happy,” she says. “I like things about the song that have nothing to do with the lyrics. Just listening gets you feeling good and relaxed.” Her playlist keeps the tempo going with grimy, new wave-inspired cuts from artists like Leah Dou, Teenage Priest and Ekkstacy. A big part of Wei’s home life revolves around motherhood—something she touches on with “變形金剛” (“Transformers”), a collab with lyricist Ge Dawei that borrows a metaphor from her son’s favourite toys. “Mothers can transform for their children and become so strong in ways that you previously would have never thought possible,” says Wei.
