Sophie Cates floats in the space where spectral introspection and insistently melodic electronic pop intersect. Initially calling herself Silver Sphere, Cates attracted attention in the late 2010s with the moody "Drinking Games," a viral hit large enough to earn the singer/songwriter a major-label contract. She swiftly decided to return to indie status, a transition accompanied by her decision to release music under her given name. After releasing a series of singles in 2022 that showed her sharpening her pop hooks, Cates pursued this direction further on Supernova, the album she released in 2024.
