About Hounds

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I grew up surrounded by instruments and music, playing at various points the drums, hammered dulcimer and piano, and singing and playing in many choral groups and bands—from choirs to a cappella groups, madrigal singers to orchestras and cover bands. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Dr. Strangely Strange, Kip Of The Serenes Love, Forever Changes (Remastered) The Zombies, Odessey and Oracle I used to be a radio DJ specializing in US and UK psychedelia from 1965 to 1972—and spent years collecting 1,000+ LPs from that span—so I adore music that's harmonic, lush, inspiring, earnest, a touch mysterious, and features 60s-style joie de vivre. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Hound Song” I've been a working poet for 25 years, so I favor songs with well-wrought lyrics, considered but surprising metaphors, and a sense of the world that's both intensely personal and devoutly universal. "Hound Song" is about me, but also about humankind. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I've been in the public eye for many years as an attorney, poet, educator, nonfiction author, and TV and radio commentator, but until I created Hounds I never had an opportunity to try to build a community around music—one of my oldest, purest loves. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Hounds is a poetics-driven project without destination or dogma, so I look forward to exploring new subgenres, new atmospheres, and lyric attentions uncommon in contemporary songwriting. I want the poetry behind the work to stay close to the surface.
