Gang Gang Dance

New York-based experimental electronic quartet Gang Gang Dance emerged in the early 2000s, adjacent to Big Apple-based bands like TV on the Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but were decidedly weirder in their songwriting and craft. Consisting of vocalist Lizzi Bougatsos, keyboardist Brian DeGraw, drummer Tim DeWit, and jack-of-all-trades Nathan Maddox, the group signed with The Social Registry, an influential label in the city’s experimental scene, and broke through in 2005 with God’s Money. But it was their next album, 2008’s Saint Dymphna (DeWit’s last with the group), that introduced their wild blend of psych, pop, electronic, and avant-garde to a wider audience. The album, led by the single “House Jam,” became a defining record in New York’s indie-rock community and earned them a deal with 4AD, with which the band released 2011’s Eye Contact, and following a hiatus, 2018’s Kazuashita.
