About Clt Drp

Formed in 2017, this dynamic and extroverted Brighton electro-punk trio deal with feminist themes in a wry fashion. All three members hail from different nations and met in late 2015 at the Brighton campus of BIMM, the British and Irish Modern Music Institute. They formed Clt Drp as a requirement of their second academic year, continuing with the band after completing their studies. Toronto-born vocalist and lyricist Annie Dorrett developed her voice in Canada singing musical theater numbers and Avril Lavigne covers before immersing herself in Brighton's alternative scene as part of the punk act Witchshark. Daphne Koskeridou, born in Drama, northern Greece, began to learn the drums at nine years old, under the tuition of her prog rock- and metal-loving father. Southampton-born Scott Reynolds started playing guitar at seven, as a result of his older brother introducing him to the music of acts such as Primus and the Prodigy. Prior to joining Clt Drp, Reynolds performed in hometown indie act Rival Joustas -- who released a sole 2007 single -- before spending eight years as frontman of the more experimental Science of Eight Limbs. On forming Clt Drp, his intention had been to simply focus on merging drum'n'bass and metal styles, but as he learned more about his new bandmates' talents, he realized that they had the chance to create something more unique. Forgoing a bass player, Reynolds used a barrage of effects to make his guitar sound like a synth. This, combined with Dorrett's stage presence and Koskeridou's frenetic and intricate drumming style, helped Clt Drp to command the full attention of audiences in Brighton's smaller venues. Their ominous-sounding and aggressive January 2018 debut single, "Merry Go Round," was self-released, while the band's first composition, "Any Man," was issued that September. Next, they shared a bill in north London with Malta's Cryptic Street to promote the following May's single "Speak to My" before heading out on a U.K.-wide tour with Bristol alt-rock act No Violet. On signing to local label Small Pond Recordings, Clt Drp began 2020 by issuing "Where the Boys Are" and "Worth It," two singles that in places recalled the electronic assault of early material by the Prodigy. Although April brought "Like Father" -- another single from their sessions with Toby May at Metway Studio -- the COVID-19 pandemic caused the group to postpone the release of their debut full-length, and the acerbic single "Seesaw" was issued in May in its place. Primarily produced by Joe Caple at Small Pond's own Brighton-based studio, the LP Without the Eyes appeared later in the year. ~ James Wilkinson
