Multifaceted musician Carlos Hernandez is associated with an arty take on indie funk that's both vocally smooth and musically complex, as exhibited in both his band Ava Luna and rare solo work under the alias Carlos Truly. Emerging in the late 2000s, Ava Luna relied heavily on vocal harmonies, free forms, and jagged, percussive arrangements before taking their sound in a gradually more structured direction beginning with 2014's Electric Balloon. Three albums later, 2018's still more refined Moon 2 was a more democratic effort with Hernandez stepping back as leader. That year, he released On Folly, his debut as Carlos Truly. With production by Truly and producer/rapper Tony Seltzer, the follow-up, 2022's Not Mine, included a collaboration with Nick Hakim.
