- Coming after the high-profile success of Raising Sand, Krauss’ collaboration with Robert Plant, Paper Airplane reunites Krauss with her old band Union Station for tunes that are often somber either in tone or in theme. Robert Lee Castleman’s country ballad, “Paper Airplane,” opens the album and sets the tone. Peter Rowan’s “Dust Bowl Children,” with Dan Tyminki on vocals, works on the uptick and “Lie Awake” keeps an easeful lope, but the tension is beginning to build as Krauss’ vocals indicate an emerging desperation. Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Dimming of the Day” retains its forlorn cadences. Jeremy Lister’s “Sinking Stone” and Jackson Browne’s “My Opening Farewell” offer the perfect pathos for Krauss to bring forth a worldview that has many unanswered questions. However, Union Station bring their expert musicianship and lift the tragedy of Sidney Cox’s “Bonita and Bill Butler” with passionate, precise banjo, the kind that has always brought great relief to bluegrass bands the world over.
- After more than 15 years of writing and recording, Alison Krauss has tied together the diverse corners of her career with Lonely Runs Both Ways. Propelled by Krauss’ fiddle playing — still razor sharp after all these years —“Rain Please Go Away,” “Unionhouse Branch,” and “This Sad Song” hearken back to Union Station’s early days as hardcore bluegrass rabble rousers. In addition, “Goodbye Is All We Have,” “Crazy As Me,” and “Doesn’t Have to Be This Way” offer that singular mix of wounded emotion and purity that Krauss perfected throughout her 20s. Then there are the hummable pop songs that continue along the path of 2001’s wildly successful New Favorite: “Restless” and “Wouldn’t Be So Bad.” Different fans gravitate towards different sides of Krauss’ art, but each holds equal space in her heart. As both a primer for newcomers and a compendium for longtime followers, Lonely Runs Both Ways is the most well-rounded entry in the catalog of an artist who refuses to stop evolving.
- Alison Krauss unpredictably shifted gears on her remarkable eighth album, balancing progressive "newgrass" tunes with adult contemporary ballads — all wrapped in traditional stringband instrumentation. The moving and romantic "Let Me Touch You For A While" unveils New Favorite, boasting exquisite dobro playing by Jerry Douglas. Union Station guitar player and singer Dan Tyminski keeps things pastoral with rootsy tones in "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" and in the coming-of-age narrative "Momma Cried." Krauss and Tyminski sing some of the most gorgeous harmonies of their entire discography on the lilting "Daylight." New Favorite won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album of the Year with the swooning single "The Lucky One" taking home a separate Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. There may not be anything here that sounds overtly timeworn like her breakthrough success with the soundtrack to 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but by blending bluegrass' roots into contemporary song craft, New Favorite takes on a life of its own.
