About Shinya Sugimoto
In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I grew up in a musical family. My parents met in an orchestra. As a kid I was surrounded by music, mainly classical. My mother first taught me how to play the piano and read music. I was inspired by Karajan, whose LPs filled the record rack in house. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Masaaki Suzuki, Bach: Mass in B minor Nas, Illmatic Sontag Shogun, Patterns for Resonant Space Bach's Mass in B Minor is my all-time favorite music and this is my favorite recording of the work. Sontag Shogun's influence and our collaboration are huge part of who I am. 90s Hip Hop is another of my roots. Nas' Illmatic is the best. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Nocturne” This is a 2017 live recording in Brussels, where Jeremy Young and I performed with Paul Clipson's film projection in our UK&Europe tour. Paul passed away a year later. Total Fiction, a collaboration with Julia Kent, connected me to global audiences. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Collaborations with Sontag Shogun. In 2017 UK&Europe tour, Jeremy Young and I performed 14 shows in 6 countries with Paul Clipson's film. US/JP tour with Jesse Perlstein also memorable. The Interactions with collaborators, audiences made me who I am. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Exploring new fields both historically and geographically. I've delved into western early music as well as technology. I want to explore different parts of the world, especially Burma, where my grandfather fought in WWII, to contribute to their peace
