About Mat Maneri
Violist Mat Maneri is a soloist and composer, known for his forward-thinking approach to modern jazz, free improvisation, and avant-garde music. Maneri attracted attention while playing alongside his father, saxophonist/theorist Joe Maneri. Since then, he's worked alongside artists including Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, and John Surman. As a leader, he's issued many small-group recordings that include 1999's So What, 2001's Trinity, and 2005's Pentagon. He's collaborated on dozens of projects including 2017's Sounding Tears with Lucian Ban and Evan Parker, and followed with Dust, a quartet offering, in 2019. Alongside Ban and Surman he released Transylvanian Folk Songs in 2020, 2023's Unshaped Words with Gordon Grdina, and 2024's Transylvanian Dances with Ban. The Surman/Ban/Maneri trio released Cantica Profana and The Athenaeum Concert. In 2026, Maneri's quartet released Mist on Sunnyside.
