Dato’ Sheila Majid transcends age. The ’80s legend is known for her bubbly mix of jazz, pop and R&B, which has made her the only Malaysian to have broken into Japan’s city pop niche—most notably with hit single “Sinaran”, an effervescent pick-me-up number that is still the subject of many bootlegged samples in nightclubs today. With a musical film dedicated to her songbook and an unwaning popularity, it’s clear that the ‘Queen of Jazz’ (even though that’s something of a misnomer) is beyond nostalgia.
