Windy & Carl

A leading light in Michigan's space rock scene of the 1990s, Windy & Carl have remained a significant influence on numerous ambient and post-rock artists throughout the following decades. Consisting of married couple Windy Weber and Carl Hultgren, their expansive, free-floating music is created entirely with guitars, bass, and a plethora of effects, with occasional keyboards or field recordings. Informed by dream pop but taking a more drone-heavy approach, the duo's music has often incorporated Weber's soft vocals, obscured on earlier releases like 1998's Depths but more upfront on later works such as Songs for the Broken Hearted (2008) and Allegiance and Conviction (2020). The otherworldly instrumental collaboration Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory appeared in 2026.
