About Courtney Pine
British saxophonist Courtney Pine is a creatively restless improvisor whose adventurous musical vision brings pop, reggae, electronica, funk, and soul to sit in with the post-bop jazz tradition. Emerging in the 1980s after formative work in both jazz and reggae contexts, Pine rose to prominence with his 1986 debut Journey to the Urge Within, which brought jazz into dialogue with British Black musical culture and made him a national figure. With albums such as 1995's Modern Day Jazz Stories and 1997's Underground he set the template for genre-blending acid-jazz, exploring the radical possibilities of hip-hop and electronica within improvisational music. Later touchstones including 2000's soul-jazz homage Back in the Day, 2017's contemporary Black Notes from the Deep, and his 2022 collaboration with Zoe Rahaman Spirituality, Pine has consistently resisted stylistic confinement, shaping a body of work that helped redefine contemporary British jazz.
