About Matmos

One of left-field electronic music's most imaginative and enduring acts, Matmos combine innovative sampling, academia-worthy concepts, and a keen wit. Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt transformed sources like freshly cut hair, the amplified neural activity of crayfish, and washing machines into music that nodded to drum'n'bass and glitch as well as American folk and medieval music. Matmos grounded their clever sonics with culturally relevant themes: 2001's A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure explored the intersection of vanity and technology with samples of plastic surgeries; 2005's The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast presented musical sketches of influential LGBTQ figures; and 2019's Plastic Anniversary depicted climate change playfully and ominously. In the 2020s, Matmos showcased their ability to revere and reinterpret history with 2022's Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer, an homage to the experimental Polish polymath, and 2023's Folkways Records-sourced Return to Archive.
