About Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee
Blues harmonica player Sonny Terry and singer/guitarist Brownie McGhee met in the late 1930s when both were playing with Piedmont blues legend Blind Boy Fuller. While each was making a living independently as a traveling musician, it wasn’t until they teamed up in 1942 that their reputations were solidified. Specializing in acoustic folk blues, Terry and McGhee remained a duo until 1980, recording and touring extensively. The pair was in particular demand on the coffeehouse and festival circuit during the folk boom of the ‘50s and ‘60s, with albums like FOLK SONGS OF SONNY TERRY AND BROWNIE MCGHEE (’58) and SONNY & BROWNIE (’73) securing their legacy. Terry died in 1986, McGhee in 1996.
