MALIQ & D’Essentials scored big with 2005’s 1st, an infectious blend of R&B, funk, jazz fusion and neo-soul. The Jakarta collective—which brothers Angga and Widi Puradiredja initially formed in 2002 as simply MALIQ—has changed members over the years for albums like 2007’s Free Your Mind. 2013’s Sriwedari marked a turning point by incorporating genres such as dangdut and retro pop, and cementing their reputation as one of Indonesia’s most vital groups in recent memory.
