About Don Helms
One of the all-time great steel guitarists of country music, Don Helms rose to prominence as part of Hank Williams's band, the Drifting Cowboys. The pair had been playing together since 1943, and, after serving in the Army for two years, Helms reunited with Williams in Nashville, joining the newly formed Drifting Cowboys. After Williams’ death, Helms worked as a session musician, and played on numerous hit recordings including "Fraulein" (Bobby Helms--no relation), "Waterloo" (Stonewall Jackson) and "Is It Wrong?" (Sonny James). In '76, the Original Drifting Cowboys re-formed in Nashville and kept up a fairly hectic performing for the next decade. Two years later, Helms began performing with Jett Williams (Hank’s daughter), remaining with her into the new millennium. He passed away in '08.
