About Whale
Alternative pop outfit Whale were formed in Sweden in 1992 by vocalist Cia Berg, guitarist Henrik Schyffert, and drummer Gordon Cyrus. They invented a fictional backstory claiming that they had actually formed in 1986 with additional members and released several albums, evolving from hard rock to a more sampler-based electronic pop sound, but in reality, their debut was the 1993 single "Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe." The bizarre, Beastie Boys-inspired song and its manic video became a cult favorite on both sides of the Atlantic. The LP We Care, featuring collaborations with Tricky, followed in 1995, but after touring in support of Blur, the trio disbanded. While Berg and Schyffert soon agreed to re-form, Cyrus chose not to return, and so guitarist Jon Jefferson Klingberg, bassist Heikki Kiviaho, and drummer Jörgen Wall were recruited for 1998's All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones. The album ended up being Whale's last, as they disbanded for good in 1999. ~ Jason Ankeny
