About Work Money Death

Work Money Death are a U.K.-based jazz collective founded by veteran saxophonist and composer Tony Burkill, bassist and composer Neil Innes, and drummer Sam Hobbs. Deeply inspired by the spiritual jazz tradition, they create contemplative yet strident music, often cut in one take with a live feel. They tend to expand the lineup on studio and live projects. Innes, Burkill, Hobbs, guitarist Chris Dawkins, and others recorded Burkill's 2017 debut outing, Work Money Death on ATA Records. They issued 2021's The Space in Which the Uncontrollable Unknown Resides, Can Be the Place from Which Creation Arises, and followed with the acclaimed Thought, Action, Reaction, Interaction in 2022. In 2024, they issued the cassette-only Forgotten, Once in a Dream, and the album People of the Fast Flowing River. Dawkins passed in 2025. They recorded 2026's A Portal to Here without a guitarist, instead employing additional reeds, winds, brass, piano, and harp.
