Casiopea

Complex compositions and technical performances characterize the work of Japanese long running jazz fusion band Casiopea. Formed in 1976 by guitarist Issei Noro (the only remaining original member) , bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, drummer Tohru "Rika" Suzuki and keuyboardist Hidehiko Koike, the group released its eponymous debut album in 1979, featuring guest appearances by Randy Brecker and David Sanborn. With a style that melds threads of jazz, funk, and electronic music, Casiopea has collaborated with names like drummers Harvey Mason and Akira Jimbo—the latter has been a member during various periods. Among their most successful albums are Eyes of the Mind (1981), the classic live outing Mint Jams (1982), Jive Jive (1983), Dramatic (1993), Flowers (1996), and Bitter Sweet (2006) Following a hiatus, the group resumed activities as Casiopea P4 with shifting lineups. Notable later dates include 2022's New Topics, 2024's Right Now, and 2025's True Blue.
