Exploring relatable themes of escape, existentialism, and wanderlust, internet rapper-producer Tohji has found a home within the hearts of angsty Japanese youth. • Tohji stepped onto the Japanese rap scene via SoundCloud with his 2017 single “I’m a Godzilla Duh,” followed by his self-produced EP 1996. • Hailing from Yokohama, a commercial suburb on the outskirts of Tokyo, Tohji makes music inspired by his hometown’s shopping centers, which serve as hubs for global cultural exchange. • In 2018, Tohji and Japanese emo-rapper gummyboy formed Mall Boyz, an homage to Japanese mall culture.
