About Phelan Burgoyne
In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I grew up in Aldeburgh, home to Benjamin Britten, singing his “Friday Afternoons” and children’s operas. At 10, I saw the Spanish Harlem Orchestra at Snape Maltings, was captivated by the timbales, and knew I wanted to play drums. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? András Schiff, Franz Schubert: Sonatas & Impromptus Jakob Bro, Balladeering The Smile, Wall of Eyes Balladeering captures jazz as deep listening and playful discovery. Schubert’s B-flat Sonata is one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces ever composed. Wall of Eyes is beautifully produced, a journey from start to finish– totally addictive. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “On Thursday” I wrote On Thursday in one sitting on a broken piano in my parents’ garage, thinking little of it. In Copenhagen, Maniscalco and Christensen brought it to life. The recording captures a simple, heartfelt moment and a formative period of my life. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? At 15, I played with Kenny Wheeler at Ronnie Scott’s, amazed my ride cymbal merged with his sound. Later, I studied with Jorge Rossy, my drum hero, and toured with him. I feel lucky to travel, play, and create something new with friends each night. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I’d just like to continue making music with my friends and wake up every day and still be inspired.
