Fine Rude Thing

Fine Rude Thing

Memphis soul, New Orleans funk, and Kingston ska run through Paul Cebar’s Fine Rude Thing to create a tasty musical gumbo that’s both bracing and intoxicating. The album finds this veteran Milwaukee roots artist rocking like a lunatic one minute and getting dizzily romantic the next, with spot-on musical backup. Reedy organs, clattering drums, and fat baritone sax give the tunes plenty of punch and savor, nicely setting off Cebar’s gruff but winningly sincere vocals. Whether the song is smooth (“The Whole Thing”), ragged (“Might Be Smiling”), or raucous (the title track), Fine Rude Thing grooves with plenty of heart and a woozy sense of fun.
