Buck Meek’s fourth solo album is a sharp turn from the breezy alt-country sound that the Big Thief guitarist has established under his own name, with whirring electronics and gnarly double-speed guitars surrounding his feathery high-register vocals. The new direction showcased on The Mirror—Meek’s second record for indie powerhouse and Big Thief label home 4AD, following 2023’s Haunted Mountain—is partially owed to Big Thief bandmate James Krivchenia manning the boards. The frenetic and intricate electronic music Krivchenia makes under his own name has clearly crept into the nooks and crannies of the 11 songs collected here, resulting in a slightly weirded-out folk-rock sound reminiscent of the woollier corners of 2000s indie rock. Along with contributions from harpist-to-the-indie-stars Mary Lattimore and frequent Jónsi collaborator Alex Somers, Big Thief frontperson Adrianne Lenker adds choral vocals across The Mirror, making for a true musical family affair.
