Following her 2021 Golden Guitar win and stint on TV’s The Block the same year, Aussie country star (and Wonnarua woman) Kirsty Lee Akers flexes both her range and consistency with this lockdown-penned mini-album. A hyper-catchy study of personal empowerment, opener “Wild One” is the first song Akers has ever written directly about herself, though she sings it in the third person. An extended mix of 2021’s “For Love” deepens the original version’s pop-inspired electronic flourishes, while “Shade of Blue” plays like a timely update of the classic country tearjerker. Joined by Amber Lawrence and Ashleigh Dallas on “Let the Girls Sing,” Akers delivers a resounding testament to sisters, daughters, and mothers. Across just seven songs, this self-produced outing doesn’t overstay its welcome. Instead, Akers knocks out meaningful verses and expansive choruses with deep feeling and then exits just as gracefully.
