The tradition of the jazz organ group has a legacy of warmth, funkiness, and deep blues feeling. What I Heard certainly draws from the format, but alto saxophonist/composer Oliver Lake and his band take the music to other places. Lake has been an avant-gardist for decades, but he has often incorporated accessible elements into his work, and this album beautifully balances convention and innovation. Lake and trumpeter Freddie Hendrix deftly execute the angular themes and play compelling solos. Drummer Chris Beck is both groovy and free. And Jared Gold brings his own subtle touch to the B3 organ. It's one of 2014’s best.
